About

The short version:

Caela Carter is an author of books for young people. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her family.

The long version:

This is my author webpage, but currently, I’m a writer, a teacher, a student, and a researcher, all at once.

I write books because I love books. And I write about young people because I recognize the fullness of their inner lives, and I get frustrated that so many adults often dismiss the ideas, brilliance, and potential I see in young people. I live in Brooklyn with my favorite two young people–my kids–plus, my husband (who is my favorite not-so-young person) and our dog, Bibi (…who is my favorite not-a-person).

When I’m not writing, you might find me teaching classes about writing books, usually to adults. I teach for The Writer’s Center in Washington, DC, and Gotham Writers Workshop, in New York City.

Or you might find me reading. It’s my number one hobby, and I read just about every kind of book you can imagine, for every age of audience. Currently, I’m trying to read my way around the world. It’s a slow, fun project full of tiny stickers, scratch off maps, and lots of books I might not otherwise pick up!

But you also might find me studying, because in a sort of joyful mid-life crisis, I put myself back in school. You can read more about that on my Substack if you’re interested at caelacarter.substack.com.

If I’m not doing any of the above, you’ll find me playing with my kids, or running in Prospect Park, or walking Bibi around my neighborhood of East Flatbush, or cheering on the USA gymnasts or the University of Notre Dame football team, or cooking up some food project in our mostly broken kitchen that I swear we will fix one day, or watching something funny on television, or traveling to the beach (where, let’s face it, I’m most likely reading).
